BOUNDARY REVIEW RECOMMENDATIONS NOT BEING IMPLEMENTED BY COUNCILS – NASH

11 December 2018

The recommendations issued by the Boundary Committee that reviewed Drogheda’s border with Co. Meath have been completely ignored, Senator Ged Nash has said,

The local Senator who secured the boundary review during his period as a Minister said;

“The delayed boundary review report was issued in February 2017 and it used every excuse under the sun to avoid having to do the logical thing; extending the boundary of Drogheda into Co. Meath, covering estates such as Highlands, Millmount Abbey and Grange Rath which are, de facto, in Drogheda.

“To save face, the review committee fudged the report and recommended to government that both Louth and Meath local authorities should work on a unified vision for Drogheda, a joint area plan for the Drogheda area, a joint retail strategy for the area and a joint programme to improve community cohesion in the area.

“These recommendations continue to be ignored and go unimplemented.

“In a reply to me, the Minister has admitted as much and has instead been forced to ‘address the issue of cross-boundary co-operation through legislative provision’. In other words, he has to bring in new laws to force Louth and Meath to work together.

“This is a farcical situation and shows just how weak this government is and what little interest it has in developing the Drogheda area towards city status, despite the empty rhetoric.”
