INFORMATION MEETING ON NEW ZERO HOURS CONTRACT LAWS SET FOR 28th MARCH

Senator Ged Nash is to host an information meeting on how workers can access their rights under the new zero hours contract laws he pioneered.

The event which will be held in the Westcourt Hotel at 7pm on Thursday the 28th March will be addressed
by Senator Nash and Paul Henry BL who is a legal adviser with the SIPTU Workers’ Rights Centre.

The Employment Miscellaneous Provisions Act came into force on the 4th March.

Senator Nash said;

“New laws giving improved rights to workers on precarious contracts are no use if people do not know how to access these new rights under those laws.

“This Act, among other things, effectively bans zero hours contracts and provides for a worker to be placed in a band of hours that more accurately reflects the reality of their working hours and patterns.

“For example, if you are on a 15 hour contract but in reality work over 30 hours per week over a 12 month reference period, then you have a right to be placed in the 30 plus band.

“This new Act will give workers more certainty over their hours and guarantees over their weekly and monthly income.

“It is important that workers who wish to understand how these new laws can benefit them and their families attend this important information event on the 28th March.”
